Phu Yen has a coastline stretching 189 kilometers, featuring numerous lagoons and bays such as Xuan Dai Bay, Vung Ro Bay, and O Loan Lagoon, which are conducive to the development of seafood fishing. In recent years, Phu Yen province has placed great emphasis on implementing seafood development policies under Government Decree 67, Prime Minister’s Decision 48, and various other policies.
In 2023, the export value of seafood accounted for 53% of the total export turnover of Phu Yen province. The number of fishing vessels and the seafood catch in offshore areas have been continuously increasing. Mr. Le Tan Ho, Vice Chairman of Phu Yen Provincial People’s Committee, stated that the province is currently developing a master plan for overall development from 2030 with a vision to 2050. This plan clearly defines the position and role of the seafood industry in economic development.
Especially, Phu Yen is considered the cradle of ocean tuna fishing in Vietnam. Tuna fishing here has been developed since the early 1900s. Ocean tuna is the province’s primary catch product.
Throughout the province, there are nine facilities for purchasing ocean tuna, including a canning factory in Song Cau town and five processing and storage facilities in Hoa Hiep Industrial Zone, Dong Hoa town, and An Phu, Tuy Hoa city. These facilities export their products to markets in Europe and the United States.
